Description

NASA launched the twin spacecraft Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 in the summer of 1977 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Initially, the Voyager missions were designed for close-up studies of Jupiter, Saturn, Saturn's rings, and the larger moons of these planets. After a series of significant discoverie, including active volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io and the detailed structure of Saturn's rings, the mission was extended. Voyager 2 continued its journey to explore Uranus and Neptune, becoming the only spacecraft to visit these outer planets.
