**Chemical formula:** FeCO₃ **Hardness:** 3.8‒4.3 **Density:** 3.7‒3.9 g/cm³ **Crystal symmetry:** Trigonal **Luster:** Vitreous to pearly **Description:** Siderite is a valuable iron mineral with colors ranging from yellow to dark brown or black. It commonly occurs in hydrothermal veins, often in association with minerals such as barite, fluorite, galena and others. Siderite is also a frequent diagenetic mineral in sedimentary rocks (e.g., sandstones), where it can form concretions. **Cinnabar (HgS)** Cinnabar is the primary ore of mercury (quicksilver) and has historically been used as a source for the bright red pigment known as vermilion. It is frequently found alongside minerals such as pyrite, marcasite, opal, quartz, calcite and barite. **Sphalerite (zinc blende, ZnS)** is the primary ore of zinc and is typically associated with galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, calcite, dolomite and fluorite.
