**Information:** Cobalt is a shiny, very hard, solid grey metal. It has ferromagnetic properties (it exhibits spontaneous magnetization).
**Use:** It is used for alloying steel and to produce various alloys, magnets and jewellery.
**Occurrence:** Cobalt is not a common feature in Earth's crust. The most important minerals are smaltite CoAs₃ and cobaltite CoAsS cobalt. It is a biogenic element (trace element), it is part of, for example, vitamin B₁₂.
**Structure:** Cobalt crystallizes into a hexagonal (primitive base cell) system.
