The formation of the chemical bond comes with the sufficient proximity of the calcium to the chlorine atom. Since the chlorine atom has a significantly higher electronegativity than the calcium atom; undergoes a total electron transfer from the electron orbital of calcium to the electron orbital of chlorine. The creation of compound CaCl₂ will generate two negatively charged chloride anions (Cl⁻) and one positively charged calcium cation (Ca²⁺). Positively charged cations are mutually attracted by negatively charged anions. This type of coupling, in which ions are formed is called an ionic bond.
