If nitrogen atoms are sufficiently close to each other, chemical bonding occurs. With the formation of a nitrogen molecule (N₂), six electrons are shared evenly by the two nitrogen atoms (schematically depicted on the model). This type of chemical bond is termed a triple covalent bond.
