Pendulum clocks typically use a harmonic mechanical oscillator and gears. Also, the energy source is mechanical – a weight or spring is commonly used.
Galileo Galilei was probably the first person who designed the construction of a pendulum clock. Christiaan Huygens then was the first who put them together.
**Oscillator**
The heart of the clock is the oscillator or a system of inertia - the pendulum. The mathematical pendulum has its own exact swing frequency.
**Escapement**
An escapement is a device that releases one tooth of an escape wheel gear at each swing of the pendulum and delivers energy back to the oscillator.
