First and Second-Class Lever

by STEAM3D

Description

Simple machines are devices that transfer power and mechanical movement from one body to another. They allow us to change the direction of a force, modify its position, or multiply its magnitude. The object on which a force is applied through a simple machine is called the load. A lever is a rod that rotates around a fixed point called the fulcrum. In a second-class lever, both the load and the effort (working force) are applied on the same side of the fulcrum, with the fulcrum located at one end. A bottle opener is an example of a second-class lever. However, some openers are based on a first-class lever, where the fulcrum is positioned between the load and the force applied to move the load, such as in pliers or scissors.
