European Pear (Pyrus Communis)

by STEAM3D+

Description

The european pear is grown for its fruit. Its precious wood can be also used, e.g. for making recorders. From Asia Minor it spread to Greece (at that time 4 cultivars were known), then it arrived in Rome. The pomes of ancient cultivars were round, but in time trees with pear-shaped pomes were cultivated. Pears contain grains for sclerenchyma (called sclereids) in their pulp. The pear is an intermediate host for pear rust. Its leaves can act as a food for the larvae of the Saturnia pyri moth.
