The **lower limb** is divided into three regions: the thigh (the region between the hip joint and knee joint), the leg (the region between the knee joint and ankle joint) and the foot (distal to the ankle). The lower limb contains 30 bones in total: the femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsal bones, metatarsal bones and phalanges. The femur is the single bone of the thigh. The patella, or kneecap, articulates with the distal femur. The tibia, located on the medial side of the leg, is the larger, weight-bearing bone, and the fibula is the thinner bone on the lateral side. The bones of the foot are divided into three groups: the posterior portion of the foot is formed by a group of seven tarsal bones, the mid-foot contains five elongated metatarsal bones, and the toes comprise 14 small phalanges. *LICENSES AND ATTRIBUTIONS CC licensed content, Shared previously, Bones of the Lower Limb, Authored by: OpenStax College.
