Description

In healthy individuals, the neuronal signal travels quickly along the axon to the terminal buttons, where synaptic vesicles release neurotransmitters into the synapse. The synapse, a tiny gap between two neurons, is crucial for neuron-to-neuron communication. After neurotransmitters are released into the synapse, they move across this small space and bind to specific receptors on the dendrite of an adjacent neuron. These receptors, which are proteins on the cell surface, have unique shapes that correspond to particular neurotransmitters, allowing each neurotransmitter to "fit" into matching receptors. *LICENSES AND ATTRIBUTIONS CC licensed content, Shared previously, Cells of the Nervous System, Authored by: OpenStax College.
