Description

The **nervous system** consists of the brain, the nervous tissue within the cranium, and the spinal cord, an extension of nervous tissue within the vertebral column. It is divided into two main regions: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS includes the brain and spinal cord, while the PNS encompasses all other nervous tissue, extending beyond the brain and spinal cord, hence its name "peripheral." While this division is standard, distinctions between central and peripheral structures can vary slightly depending on the functional or structural context of the nervous system. *LICENSES AND ATTRIBUTIONS CC licensed content, Shared previously, 1.1 Basic Structure and Function of the Nervous System, Authored by: OpenStax College.
