Although we may not typically consider **skin** an organ, composed of tissues that function together as a unified structure, performing unique and essential roles. The skin, along with its accessory structures, forms the integumentary system, which provides comprehensive protection for the body. Structurally, the skin consists of multiple layers of cells and tissues anchored to underlying structures by connective tissue. The deeper layer of the skin is richly vascularized, containing numerous blood vessels, and is equipped with extensive sensory, autonomic and sympathetic nerve fibers that facilitate communication to and from the brain. *LICENSES AND ATTRIBUTIONS CC licensed content, Shared previously, Donna Browne, Integumentary System Module 2: Layers of the Skin, Authored by: OpenStax College.
