by STEAM3D

Description

Distribution: Islands of the Aldabra Size: Male ‒ 122 cm, Female ‒ 98 cm Life Span: Up to 150 years Diet: Herbivorous Social life: Solitary or in herds IUCN red list status: Vulnerable The Aldabra giant tortoise is one of the largest terrestrial tortoises in the world. Endemic to the Aldabra Atoll and the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean, populations have also been introduced to Mauritius and Réunion. These tortoises have created a unique habitat known as "tortoise turf," a blend of various grasses and herbs that also serves as a natural habitat for several smaller species. Aldabra giant tortoises engage in a range of activities, including mating attempts, stretching, walking, feeding, sleeping and defecating. Currently, the Aldabra giant tortoise is one of only three giant tortoise species from the region that have survived past exploitation and habitat loss. It is the only species to remain in the wild, with the others sustained solely through captive breeding programs.
