Choanoflagellates

by STEAM3D+

Description

Choanoflagellates are tiny aquatic protozoans that inhabit oceans as well as freshwater biotopes. They can live freely in the water column or sedentary. Several species form colonies of more individuals that are attached together by adhesive mucus. On the outer surface of the colony are normal individuals but inside can be amoeboid choanoflagellates without the flagellum. Some species harden their outer skeleton with siliceous spines so they can resemble sponges. Choanoflagellates feed by tiny food particles that are pushed by the movement of the flagellum through the microvilli collar where are trapped. There are more that one hundred species worldwide.
