The novel To Kill a Mockingbird was first published in 1960. It was set a few decades earlier in the early 1930s, when there was widespread financial hardship due to the Great Depression, and when in much of Southern USA racial segregation was considered normal. Students can explore this town to visit the key setting within the book including: The Church, The Courthouse and street to understand the context and symbolism of the book.

# Context and Setting{.objective .objective1}
In this section students can learn that ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is set in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama. In this activity students are asked to enter the scene and walk through the town, allow yourself to become immersed in the setting. How does this town feel; it is grand and wealthy, or more simple?
# The Trial{.objective .objective2}
Scout and her other brother Jem get many glimpses into the adult world as they grow up during To Kill A Mockingbird. In this activity students will step into the courthouse and explore the area. Who were the jury in the trial of Tom Robinson? Did Tom receive a fair trial? What impact did this have on Scout and Jem as they understand more about the adult world?
# Who is a Mockingbird?{.objective .objective3}
Scout and Jem are told “Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” because mockingbirds do no harm, they cause no damage to crops, they just sing. Your students will visit the house of Arthur Radley. Why do the children call him ‘Boo’ at the start of the novel? What assumptions do they make because he doesn’t come out of his scruffy house?
