Description

A prokaryote is a single cellular organism, that lacks membrane-bound organelles.

Prokaryotes are divided into two domains; Archaea (microorganisms, poorly defined and mostly found in extreme environments) and Bacteria.

Most live as single celled organisms, however some join together into organised multicellular structures.

Prokaryotes reproduce through asexual reproduction, typically binary fission. Gene transfer is not a replicative process, rather genetic material is transferred between two cells in a horizontal fashion.

Archaea are found in a huge variety of habitats ranging from a cows gut, to volcanic mud, to anaerobic environments where even a hint of oxygen is deadly.
