Description

Often referred to as the 'powerhouse of the cell', mitochondria are organelles that are responsible for many of the reactions involved in cellular respiration.

A mitochondrion is made of two membranes: the outer membrane covers the organelle, while the inner membrane is folded many times, creating layered structures named cristae, whose high surface area facilitates a greater rate of reactions. Fluid within a mitochondrion is called the matrix.
