The gladius, from the classical Latin word for 'sword,' was one of the primary weapons used by ancient Roman soldiers on the field of battle. While many different varieties of gladius were used throughout the Roman age almost all of them were suitable for both cutting and thrusting alongside the Scutum (shield) that soldiers generally carried.
